Love That Came First - Romans 5:8

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

- Romans 5:8

Valentine’s season often focuses on love that is expressed, returned, and celebrated between people. But this verse points us to a love that is deeper, steadier, and completely unmatched, the love of God.

Romans 5:8 reminds us that God did not wait for us to become worthy, disciplined, or perfect before loving us. His love was not a response to our performance. It was a decision rooted in His character.

He loved first.
He loved fully.
He loved sacrificially.

Before we ever pursued Him, He pursued us. Before we ever changed, He made a way for our transformation. The cross is the clearest proof that God’s love is not based on feelings or conditions; it is covenant, commitment, and grace.

Human love can be beautiful, but it is often limited by emotion, circumstance, or reciprocity. God’s love is different. It is constant when we are inconsistent. It is patient when we are growing. It is secure when everything else feels uncertain.

This is the love that anchors identity, steadies the heart, and gives meaning to every other form of love we experience.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for loving me before I ever deserved it.
Thank You for showing Your love through the sacrifice of Christ.
Help me rest in the security of Your love and reflect it in how I live and treat others.
Teach me to receive Your love fully — and to live from it every day.
Amen.

My sweet wife, who is now with Jesus, and I went to marriage counseling before we were married. I recommend this for everyone young or old. The one thing I remember most is my pastor told us that not only were we making a covenant with each other but we were also making a covenant with God and that covenant could never be broken. The few times we were having problems I always remembered what the pastor said. I believe everyone should make this commitment to each other and especially to God. There would be no divorce if every married couple lived by this advice.
