When Today Stops Feeling Unlimited - Psalm 90:12
“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”
-Psalm 90:12
Most of us know that our time is limited, but we rarely plan our days as if we truly believe it. We postpone the apology, the difficult conversation, time with God, or the thing we know we should begin. It is not always because we do not care. We simply assume there will be a better opportunity later.
Psalm 90 places our brief lives beside the eternity of God. Moses does not ask God to make him more productive or help him fit more into his schedule. He asks to be taught to number his days. Recognizing that our time is limited is not meant to make us fearful. It is meant to help us see each day more clearly.
The verse connects numbered days with a wise heart. Wisdom is more than knowing what matters. It is allowing what matters to shape how we actually spend our time. A full calendar can still be filled with things that deserve very little of us, while important relationships, responsibilities, and spiritual habits repeatedly get whatever attention remains.
We need God to teach us this because our natural instinct is to live as if time will continue making room for everything we delay. Numbering our days does not mean treating every moment like a productivity challenge. It means receiving today as something valuable and deciding what deserves to be carried into it. Choose one thing you have continued placing in “later” and take a faithful step toward it today.
Prayer: God, teach me to recognize the value of the time You have given me. Give me wisdom to stop delaying what matters and help me spend today with purpose, gratitude, and attention. Amen.
