3rd Sunday of Lent - Luke 13:3

“Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

- Luke 13:3 (ESV)

When Jesus speaks these words in Luke 13, He is responding to two tragedies that people had been discussing. Some Galileans had been killed by Pilate while they were offering sacrifices, and a tower in Siloam had collapsed and killed eighteen people. Many in the crowd assumed these victims must have been worse sinners than everyone else.

Jesus rejects that thinking.

He tells them plainly that those who died were not worse than others. Their suffering was not proof of greater guilt. But instead of letting the crowd remain in speculation about other people’s sins, He turns the question inward. Twice He says the same thing: unless you repent, you will likewise perish.

His point is not that everyone will die in the same kind of accident. His point is that life is fragile and uncertain. The tragedies they were discussing were reminders that no one knows how much time they have. Rather than analyzing the failures of others, Jesus calls each person to examine their own heart before God.

Repentance in Scripture is not simply regret or guilt. The word means to change direction. It is a turning of the mind and the heart back toward God. Jesus is calling people to wake up spiritually while there is still time.

During Lent, this passage challenges us in the same way. It is easy to look at the world around us and focus on the mistakes or failures of others. But Christ always brings the focus back to the condition of our own hearts. Lent is not a season for comparison. It is a season for repentance.

The good news is that repentance is not meant to lead us into despair. It leads us toward mercy. When we turn toward God, we discover that He has been ready to receive us all along.

Prayer: Lord, keep my heart from becoming distracted by the faults of others while ignoring my own need for You. Give me humility to repent, courage to change, and a deeper desire to walk in Your ways. Use this season of Lent to draw me closer to You. Amen.

Good word my friends. Really makes me think even about my why to change my body. Need to repent of putting the physical change before my spiritual change. Thank you!!! God bless
