Do Not Despise The Small Day - Zechariah 4:10
“For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice.”
- Zechariah 4:10
Zechariah 4:10 is not just a motivational reminder to appreciate small starts. It is a warning about how easily we can misjudge what God is doing.
The people were rebuilding the temple, but the work did not look impressive compared to what had been there before. It was easy to look at the progress and feel disappointed. Easy to compare it to the past. Easy to wonder if something that looked this small could really matter. But God saw it differently. What they were tempted to dismiss, He was still using.
Sometimes we do not despise small things because they are meaningless. We despise them because they expose our pride. We wanted the work to look bigger by now. We wanted the answer to come faster. We wanted obedience to feel more rewarding. We wanted the rebuilding to look more like success and less like starting over.
But God is not embarrassed by what looks unfinished. He is not rushed by what feels slow. He does not need the process to look impressive before it is faithful. The question is whether we can trust Him when His work does not look like what we expected.
There may be something in your life right now that feels too small to count. A quiet return to prayer. A relationship being repaired one honest conversation at a time. A discipline you keep restarting. A responsibility that feels hidden. A step of obedience that no one else would call significant. Do not be so quick to look down on it. If God is calling you to it, it matters more than it appears.
This week, ask God to help you stop measuring His work by how impressive it looks. Some things are worth rejoicing over long before they look complete.
Prayer: Lord, help me not to look down on what You are doing just because it feels small, slow, or unfinished. Teach me to trust Your work even when it does not match my expectations. Remove the pride that makes me crave what looks impressive, and give me faithfulness for what You have placed in front of me. Amen.

I just recently downloaded this app thinking it was just a an athletic clothing company. It is so much more and I love that there is a section dedicated to devotionals! This is just another reason why I love this company!

Yes- indeed! The beauty of “small things” brings about peace while keeping our “eyes” on Jesus. Great reminder…. Thank you.

Encouraged by these devotionals. You should really consider compiling them in a book.
