You Don’t Have to Figure It All Out - Psalm 131:1-2

"O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me."

The pressure to understand everything can disguise itself as responsibility. We tell ourselves that we are being careful or prepared, but often we are mentally replaying a conversation, predicting someone’s reaction, or searching for an explanation that simply is not available yet. We want enough information to guarantee that we will not be surprised, disappointed, or hurt.

David takes a different posture in this psalm. He acknowledges that some matters are beyond him. That is not laziness or a refusal to think. It is an honest recognition that he is not God. He does not need to understand every decision God makes, see every outcome in advance, or solve every unknown before he can trust Him.

The picture of the weaned child makes this passage especially meaningful. An infant comes to its mother expecting to be fed, but a weaned child has learned to rest in her presence without immediately receiving something. David is describing a faith that can remain close to God even when God has not provided the answer, changed the situation, or explained what He is doing.

Notice that David says, “I have calmed and quieted my soul.” The quiet did not simply arrive. He intentionally brought his restless thoughts back under the truth of who God is. This week, when your mind starts demanding answers it cannot have, ask yourself: What has God actually asked me to do today, and what am I trying to understand before I will trust Him? You may not receive every explanation, but you can still rest with the One who sees the entire picture.

Prayer: God, I admit how quickly I become consumed with questions I cannot answer and outcomes I cannot control. Help me obey what You have placed in front of me and trust You with everything I cannot yet understand. Teach my soul to rest in Your presence, even when an answer has not come. Amen.
