When Hurry Feels Safer - Isaiah 30:15

“For thus said the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel,
‘In returning and rest you shall be saved;
in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.’
But you were unwilling,”

Judah was facing a serious threat, and its leaders responded by making plans with Egypt. They wanted protection, military strength, and something tangible they could depend on. Earlier in the chapter, God points out that they carried out this plan without asking for His direction. Their problem was not that they recognized the danger. It was that fear had already decided where they would turn for safety.

God offered them another way: “In returning and rest you shall be saved.” Returning meant abandoning the rescue plan they had built without Him and coming back under His direction. Rest did not mean pretending the threat was gone. It meant refusing to let panic become their leader.

The final words of the verse are difficult because they are so honest: “But you were unwilling.” Judah did not reject God’s invitation because it was unclear. They rejected it because trusting Him felt less secure than taking immediate action. Waiting quietly can feel irresponsible when sending another message, demanding an answer, changing the plan, or forcing a decision gives us the temporary comfort of doing something.

Not every quick decision is wrong, but urgency deserves to be questioned. Before you act, ask whether you are responding to God’s direction or simply trying to escape the discomfort of uncertainty. The strength described in this verse is the ability to stop letting fear choose your next move. Return to God, bring Him the situation honestly, and allow trust to come before action.

Prayer: God, show me where fear has been directing my decisions. Help me return to You before I rush toward another solution, and give me the strength to trust Your direction even when waiting feels uncomfortable. Amen.
