Known by the Shepard - John 10:14
“I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,”
John 10:14
Jesus says these words while drawing a contrast between himself and a hired hand. The hired hand watches the sheep because it is his job, but when danger comes, he runs. The sheep do not belong to him, so protecting them is only worth so much risk. Jesus is different. He calls himself the good shepherd and immediately says, “I know my own.” His care is personal because the people he protects belong to him.
We are used to being partially known. People may know what we do for work, what we post, or how we act around them without knowing what we carry privately. Even with those closest to us, we decide what to explain and what to keep hidden. That habit can follow us into prayer. We try to find the right words, clean up our motives, or make our struggle sound more reasonable before bringing it to God.
Jesus does not care for a polished version of you. He already knows where your faith is strong, where it is thin, what you are afraid to admit, and which wound is still shaping your reactions. Yet his knowledge is not cold or condemning. It belongs to the Shepherd who goes on to say that he lays down his life for the sheep. He knows you completely, and that complete knowledge did not keep him from loving you sacrificially.
The verse also says that his own know him. This does not mean we understand every decision God makes. A sheep knows its shepherd primarily by recognizing his voice and staying near him. We come to know Jesus the same way, through repeated time in his Word, honest prayer, and obedience to what he has already made clear. You do not have to impress him enough to receive his attention. You can speak honestly because you are already known.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for knowing me fully and still calling me Your own. Help me stop hiding behind polished words and come to You honestly. Teach me to recognize Your voice and remain close to You. Amen.

This is the third time in the last 90 minutes I heard Jesus is my Shepard. I think He’s telling me to let go and trust Him fully!
