The Cost of Doing Everything Alone - Ecclesiastes 4:9
“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.”
- Ecclesiastes 4:9
Immediately before this verse, Ecclesiastes describes a man who works endlessly but has no one with whom to share what he has built. His eyes are never satisfied, yet he never stops to ask why he is exhausting himself. “Two are better than one” is not merely a pleasant statement about friendship. It is the answer to a life that has become productive, busy, and deeply isolated.
Independence can feel safer than relying on people. If we handle everything ourselves, nobody can disappoint us, misunderstand us, or see where we are struggling. We may even take pride in being the person who never needs help. But self-reliance has a cost. Eventually, no one knows how much weight we are carrying, where we need encouragement, or when we are close to falling.
The “good reward” described in this verse includes what people can accomplish together, but it goes beyond productivity. Shared work brings perspective, encouragement, and the ability to keep moving when one person’s strength runs low. Trusted people can notice blind spots we cannot see, challenge the stories we have been telling ourselves, and remind us of truth when our own thoughts become unreliable.
Being capable does not mean you were designed to do everything alone. Consider one part of your life that you have kept unnecessarily private. Instead of waiting until you are overwhelmed, tell someone you trust what is actually happening. Ask for prayer, advice, accountability, or simply their presence. Community begins when we become willing to be known before everything is fixed.
Prayer: God, show me where independence has turned into isolation. Give me the humility to let trustworthy people know me, support me, and speak truth into my life. Help me become that kind of person for others as well. Amen.
