When More Is Never Enough - 1 Timothy 6:6
“But godliness with contentment is great gain.”
- 1 Timothy 6:6
The finish line for contentment has a habit of moving. We tell ourselves we will finally feel settled after the next purchase, promotion, physical goal, relationship milestone, or answered prayer. Then we reach it, enjoy it briefly, and discover another reason that life still does not feel complete.
Paul writes to Timothy about people who viewed godliness as a way to gain something. His response is not that gain is unimportant, but that they have misunderstood what real gain is. A faithful life joined with contentment is worth far more than using faith to obtain the life we think will finally satisfy us.
Contentment is not complacency. It does not require abandoning meaningful goals, ignoring areas that need to change, or pretending we no longer want anything. It means those desires no longer control our ability to recognize what God has already given us. We can pursue growth without making the next achievement responsible for our peace.
Without contentment, even good things become inadequate almost as soon as we receive them. There is always another comparison to make or another version of life to chase. This week, notice where you keep saying, “I will be satisfied once…” Bring that desire honestly to God, but also name what is already good, sufficient, and worthy of gratitude today.
Prayer: God, show me where I have made contentment dependent on receiving something more. Help me pursue growth without overlooking what You have already provided, and teach me to recognize the greater gain of a life centered on You. Amen.
