Your Growth Is Not Yours Alone - 1 Thessalonians 5:24
“He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.”
-1 Thessalonians 5:24
By the time Paul reaches this verse, he has given the Thessalonians a demanding series of instructions. They are to encourage the discouraged, help the weak, pursue what is good, remain thankful, test what they hear, and reject evil. It would be easy to read the chapter as a spiritual performance review and leave thinking that becoming faithful depends entirely on trying harder.
Then Paul prays that the God of peace would sanctify them completely and keep them blameless until Jesus returns. That prayer is followed by this assurance: “He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” God does not simply show us the person we should become and then leave us to produce that change alone. The One who calls us also commits Himself to the work of shaping us.
This promise does not make our obedience unnecessary. Paul has just given them clear commands that require a response. It does, however, change where our confidence rests. Our growth is not secured by an unbroken streak of perfect discipline. It rests on the character of a faithful God who continues working through our obedience, repentance, setbacks, and returns.
You may see an area of your life where change feels painfully slow. Perhaps you have repeated the same mistake, neglected a habit you meant to build, or become discouraged by how far you still have to go. Do not confuse unfinished work with abandoned work. Take the next faithful step God has placed in front of you, trusting that He remains present and active in the process.
Prayer: God, thank You for not leaving me to change through my strength alone. Help me respond faithfully to what You are showing me without becoming discouraged by how unfinished I feel. Keep shaping my life and teaching me to trust Your faithfulness. Amen.
